SIDNEY COOPER GALLERY EXHIBITION

Humphrey Ocean at the Sidney Cooper Gallery in Canterbury
26/01/12
The exhibition had in attendance over 100 hundred people who were here to also view Humphrey Oceans returns to the Sidney Cooper Gallery with a handful of key works spanning his time as a student at Canterbury Christ Church University including a drawing made at the gallery in 1973 through to recently completed paintings. The brief was to cover the event showing the exhibits in situ along with people viewing the art work as well. I arrived just prior to the crowds descending which gave me the opportunity to cover each piece of artwork, the most impressive being a sculpture by artist Anish Kapoor who has recently been in the news for his controversial Orbit sculpture which is at the Olympic Park, I think with a lot of art you either love it or hate it, very much like photography, and if it raises controversy then to my mind the artist has done his job.Once the speeches were out of the way and the exhibition had been officially opened I took a few group photos of the Vice chancellor with the artists, I found taking some portraits of Humphrey Ocean interesting, he wasn't too keen on looking in to the camera and kept looking away, not too sure if he found the attention a bit too overwhelming but the off camera moments worked really well. His work is very diverse and well worth visiting the Sidney Cooper Gallery in Canterbury to view, plus the other work which is a mix of photos, paintings, sculptures plus a metal frame that has big slabs of rubber sliding down a rack of shelves, you have to see it to appreciate it. The Now & Then and Third Dimension exhibitions run until March 3rd 2012.
